Videocult is the studio behind Airframe Ultra, working with publisher Akupara Games, and the team has been unusually talkative about the game: a pre-launch message from the developers, a launch-week publisher update, and press previews that quote them directly. The clearest window into their thinking is a message from Videocult's James and Joar that went out before the November 5, 2026 release. In it they call this a huge jump from their previous game, which they describe as "literally a retro indie 2d platformer," and say they are deliberately taking "this initial Airframe 1.0" slowly so it establishes the fundamentals with as few breakages as possible.

What did Videocult say about the launch and post-launch plans?

They said the first release focuses on fundamentals, with new content rolling out roughly every quarter afterward. The pre-launch message notes that "some veteran players might notice certain elements are curiously absent from this release," without naming them, and that the team intends to keep "rolling out new content every quarter or so, until the game fills out all the crazy ideas we have in mind for the world." The same message credits the community for testing demos, making fan art and hyping the game. The full text is in the pre-launch developer message on Steam.

What inspired Airframe Ultra?

The developers framed it as filling a gap they saw in games. In a 2023 reveal quoted by Hey Poor Player, Videocult co-founder James Therrien said, "It's the year 2023, why are there no super cool retro cyberpunk hoverbike racing combat games? I feel like I was lied to by society. So it looks like we're going to have to do it ourselves." He went on to list katanas, molotov cocktails and a swingable chain, and cited Twisted Metal, Vigilante and Carmageddon as touchstones. According to Hey Poor Player, Akupara Reveals Vehicular Combat Title, Airframe Ultra, that quote came from the developers themselves. PC Gamer's preview coverage also describes the project as a sharp turn from Rain World toward something "loud and dumb and fast," per PC Gamer.

What were the challenges in development?

The main documented challenge is scope: a small studio moving from 2D platforming to a 3D multiplayer game. Videocult's message lists the pieces — character creation, lobbies, matchmaking, progression systems, stores and unlockables — as a "HUGE jump" and explains the cautious 1.0 rollout as a way to manage risk while bugs get worked out. The same message thanks players for testing through the betas. A preview citing hands-on demo time, from Indiecator, describes the game as part racer and part brawler where you jump off your bike and fight between race segments — the writer's own observations on the demo, not developer statements.

What have they said about launch events and community?

The publisher described an "Eight Days to Infamy" event running from launch on Nov 5 through Nov 12, 2026, with a daily contest (fan art, fan fiction, cosplay, combat clips, racing clips, outfits and a wildcard day) and winners announced on a celebration livestream. Contests ran through the Airframe Ultra Discord, and a separate announcement later set the winner reveal for the 11/12 livestream. The schedule is laid out in the Eight Days to Infamy announcement on Steam.

Where can I find more developer statements?

The Steam announcement feed is where the longest posts live. Beyond the pre-launch message, Videocult and Akupara published beta recaps and devlogs covering price, schedule and the beta progression, and the October 2026 devlog confirmed the $12.99 release price with a 25% launch discount for the first 14 days. Between those posts and the press quotes above, you have the documented picture of what the developers have said; anything beyond that, such as unannounced post-launch content, has not been detailed officially.
